Facilities Operations Fire & Life Safety
The Fire & Life Safety section is charged with Fire and Life Safety Code enforcement, as well as auditing compliance of campus fire and safety systems. This section also teaches campus fire safety, confined space entry, hazardous material response, and other specialized courses.
Authority having Jurisdiction:
The University of Colorado is a constitutionally created state body-corporate, which is governed by the Board of Regents. Pursuant to this, the University of Colorado Denver has chosen to become our own Authority having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire prevention and life safety concerns on the Anschutz Medical Campus and Denver campuses. Dr. James Shore, our previous Chancellor, signed the initial acceptance of the AHJ on June 24, 2002 and it was re-authorized by the current Chancellor, Dr. M. Roy Wilson, on July 6, 2006. Provisions of the AHJ are found in the campus policies section, and the Fire and Life Safety Policies link (to the right).
Fire Safety & Extinguisher Class
This course covers material concerning fire hazards and fire mitigation on campus, and proper decision-making in the event of a fire. An optional 30 minute "hands on" session is available in the warmer months, that allow participants to use several types of fire extinguishers on small, controlled fires. The course is recommended for all personnel. Classes are scheduled monthly and by request. A minimum of 10 people must be registered.
Contact the Fire & Life Safety Officer for inspections, classes, or fire safety information.
